Mark Pickett, NCCU Law class of 2009, was recently selected as one of two new Osborn Fellows at the Fair Trial Initiative, a non-profit that seeks to address the lack of competent trial counsel for indigent defendants facing the death penalty.  Osborn Fellows are selected from among hundreds of applicants from all over the country to participate in a two-year program in which they work with experienced attorneys on capital cases across North Carolina. Agu Onuma, SBA PResident 2009-2010

August 17, 2009

Welcome Back Everyone!! I know for many of you, this will be an exciting and challenging year. As we embark on this academic year, please remember that there is a reason you are all here at this moment in time. As the Student Bar Association President, I charge you to exhibit professionalism to your professors, staff and peers; to echo friendliness and healthy competition while in class and in your studies;  and to remember that the greatest lawyers from NCCU Law have been those lawyers who approach their legal career with ethics, character and an open mind to always continue to embrace diversity in our community.

Congratulations to the class of 2010 for making it this far, and welcome to the family, our new classes of 2012 and 2013.

Sincerely,

Agu K. Onuma.

SBA President.

SONNY HAYNES NAMED 2008-09 WOMBLE CARLYLE SCHOLAR

September 26, 2008
Sonny Haynes, a student at the North Carolina Central School of Law, has been named a Womble Carlyle Scholar by Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, PLLC.

Haynes is a graduate of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where she earned a BA in communication studies. Currently, she is the Treasurer of the Black Law Student Association at North Carolina Central. Recently, she earned first place in the Mary Wright 1L Trial Advocacy Competition.  She worked in Womble Carlyle’s Winston-Salem office as a summer clerk in 2008. Sonny also is a North Carolina Real Estate Broker.

The Womble Carlyle Scholars Program was established in 2004 to honor minority second-year law school students for their academic credentials, participation in community service and achievement outside the classroom. The program is designed to increase participation in the bar by traditionally underrepresented groups.

Womble Carlyle scholars each receive an $8,000 scholarship, as well as an offer of summer employment as a summer associate.

To date, five former Womble Carlyle Scholars are employed with the firm as full-time attorneys.

“The Womble Carlyle Scholars Program has been a tremendous success, and we believe this outstanding group of Scholars will only add to that legacy,” said Gloria Agard, the firm’s Director of Diversity and Workplace Initiatives.
