After nearly 15 years, Page Potter is stepping down as director of the Pro Bono Program effective July 31, 2017. Potter started at NCCU Law in Fall 2002 as half-time Assistant Director of Academic Support and half-time Pro Bono Coordinator; she became full-time Pro Bono Coordinator as of Fall 2005, when additional full-time positions were added in academic support, and Pro Bono Director as of 2007.

Prior to 2002, the Pro Bono Program consisted of the 1-credit Pro Bono Clinic course, the 1-credit Street Law course, and the VITA project, was headed by Lydia Lavelle, who also served as Assistant Dean for Student Services and Director of Alumni Relations. Over the years the program has grown to encompass as many as 15 pro bono projects each year, including VITA, the Innocence Project, Elder Law Project, Driver’s License Restoration Project, Legal Aid Ambassadors, Legal Aid Expunctions Clinics, the Citizen Schools Mock Trial Apprenticeship, Lawyers 4 Literacy, Lawyer on the Line, Truancy Court, and Teens N Transition. NCCU Law pro bono projects received the NC Bar Association’s Student Group Pro Bono Award in 2011, 2012, and 2016. Potter continued to teach the Pro Bono Clinic course, re-named the Public Interest Externship in 2012, and the Street Law course each semester, and starting in summer 2006 also directed the Legal Eagle Law Camp for middle and high school students each summer.

Potter is looking forward to working part-time, taking courses at the North Carolina Botanical Garden, and of course, volunteering. She says, “It has been a privilege and an honor to work with my talented, dedicated and respected NCCU Law colleagues and with such wonderful students, and to help forward the uniquely important mission of NCCU School of Law. I treasure the relationships I have made here and will always be proud to count myself one of the Legal Eagle family.”
