Nelwyn Mpare was born in Charlotte, N.C. She received her undergraduate degree from Spelman College, graduating with a B.A. in political science in 1977. She received her Juris Doctor from North Carolina Central University (NCCU) School of Law in 1980.
After receiving her J.D., Professor Mpare was in private practice in Charlotte, N.C. and Monroe, N.C. until 1990. In 1990, she relocated to Durham and accepted a position as an Assistant Public Defender. She returned to the private practice of law in 1994.
Before becoming a full-time clinical professor, Professor Mpare taught at NCCU School of Law as an adjunct professor and clinical supervising attorney for the Criminal and Civil Litigation Clinics from 1999 to 2001.
Professor Mpare is a member of the N.C. State Bar, Durham County Bar, George H. White Bar, N.C. Association of Black Lawyers, North Carolina Bar Association and the American Bar Association. She enjoys photography, music and traveling.
