Biography

Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Judge Nancy Gordon has lived and practiced law in Durham since 1981. Judge Gordon graduated in 1976 from the University of Michigan with a liberal arts degree and in 1979 from the law school at Case Western University in Cleveland, OH. By coincidence, at almost the same time that Gordon was opening her private practice in 1982, the North Carolina Legislature adopted the law of Equitable Distribution giving women marital interests in property, and, as a private practice lawyer, Gordon discovered that women clients wanted women attorneys to represent them in family law cases. Eventually Judge Gordon limited her practice to Family Law and became a Board Certified Family Law Specialist and a Fellow with the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. In 2006, Judge Gordon successfully ran and was elected to serve as a District Court Judge in Durham. Since 2015, Judge Gordon has served as an Emergency District Court Judge, an Arbitrator and Mediator in family law cases, and an adjunct faculty member at NCCU Law School, teaching Family Law to the evening students in the Winter of 2018.

In June 2019, Judge Gordon started with the Academic Support Team at NCCU Law. Because she believes that the practice of law is an honorable profession and that the public deserves hardworking, ethical and qualified legal representation, Judge Gordon is honored to be part of that process.
