Lindsey W. Spain is a North Carolina native from Benson in Johnston County. She attended Clemson University from 2005-2009 where she graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in English and a minor in History and was inducted as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She then attended the University of North Carolina School of Law and received her Juris Doctor in 2012 with honors. While in law school, Spain was a member of Holderness Moot Court and named to the Order of Barristers, was awarded the Winston Crisp Award for Student Leadership and the 3L Pro Bono Student of the Year award, was inducted into the Davis Society (recognizing 8 graduating students with academic & personal excellence based on leadership, integrity, character, & dedication), and served in various leadership positions.


Spain developed a passion for criminal defense while participating in the Juvenile Justice Clinic at UNC Law and interning for the Mecklenburg County and Orange County Public Defender’s Offices and North Carolina Prisoner Legal Services. Upon graduation, Spain accepted a position at Thomas, Ferguson & Mullins, LLP in Durham, N.C. as an attorney specializing in criminal defense. She represented both private and appointed clients in a range of cases in both state and federal court from misdemeanors to high-level felonies, including a high-profile murder case. Spain also served as an adjunct professor for the Juvenile Justice Clinic at UNC School of Law before joining the Office of Academic Success at NCCU School of Law. She teaches Critical Thinking and N.C. Distinctions.


Spain is licensed to practice in North Carolina state courts, the Middle District of North Carolina federal district court, and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. She is a member of the 14th Judicial Bar and is on the Board of Directors for the Durham County Bar Association. She lives in Durham with her husband, Benjamin, and their two dogs. In her free time, she enjoys reading, exercising, playing piano, and travelling.
