Biography

Deria P. Hayes is a native of Durham, N.C. She received her undergraduate degree in business administration from North Carolina Central University (NCCU) in 1993. Professor Hayes earned her Juris Doctor from NCCU School of Law in 1998. She was admitted into the North Carolina Bar in 1998.

After graduation from the law school, Attorney Hayes worked at the Law Offices of James D. Williams, Jr., P.A. as an associate attorney from 1998 until 2008. While in private practice, her principal areas of practice were family law and civil litigation.  She joined the law school in 2009 and formerly served as Supervising Attorney for the Domestic Violence Clinic at NCCU School of Law until 2016.  Since 2017, she has served as Interim Director for the Pro Bono Program and as Program Coordinator for the Virtual Justice Project.  She also teaches Appellate Advocacy and Trial Practice for law students and Introduction to the First Year Law Experience for undergraduate and/or graduate students aspiring to attend law school.

She is a member of the 16th Judicial District Bar and the North Carolina Bar Association.  She currently is a board member for the NCCU School of Law Alumni Association.
