Professor Brenda Gibson

J.D., North Carolina Central University
B.A., North Carolina State University

Brenda D. Gibson (’95) is the Director of Legal Writing at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) School of Law and an Assistant Professor of Law. She teaches primarily in the first-year Legal Writing Program, but has also taught some upper-level Legal Writing courses. Professor Gibson is active in both the Association of Legal Writing Directors (ALWD) and the Legal Writing Institute (LWI). She is an elected Board member of ALWD, serves on the Editorial Board of LWI Monograph Series, and is co-chair of LWI’s Awards Committee. She previously chaired the ALWD Bylaws Committee, 2017-18. Professor Gibson is also the faculty co-advisor (with Professor Nichelle J. Perry) for the North Carolina Central University Law Review.

Prior to joining the faculty at NCCU School of Law, Professor Gibson was employed as a Staff Attorney with the North Carolina Court of Appeals, Office of Staff Counsel. Prior to being a Staff Attorney, she was law clerk to Judge Clifton E. Johnson (deceased) and Judge (later Justice, retired) Patricia Timmons-Goodson at the Court of Appeals. Professor Gibson’s local professional memberships include the N.C. State Bar and the Tenth Judicial District Bar Association. Professor Gibson is a member of the Law School’s Student Performance Enhancement Committee, Admissions Committee, Curriculum Committee, and Scholarship Committee. Additionally, she serves on the University’s Traffic Appeals Committee.

Professor Gibson’s scholarship is an intersection between the science of pedagogy (or androgogy) and social science. She is most concerned with how best to teach her students and the motivations for the actions of those students. She has published several articles and shorter pieces about grading rubrics, best practices in teaching, and plagiarism. She co-authored (along with Laura P. Graham, Julie L. Kimbrough, and Nichelle J. Perry) the third edition of North Carolina Legal Research, which will be published by Carolina Academic Press in August 2019.

Professor Gibson received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from North Carolina State University and her Juris Doctor cum laude from NCCU School of Law. She is a voracious reader and enjoys writing and mentoring community youth. She plans to start a blog to combine those three interests– reading, writing, and mentoring.

Professor Gibson is married to Adolph Simmons, Jr., and they have two sons. The family resides in Wendell, North Carolina.
