Brenda D. Gibson (’95) is the Director of Legal Writing at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) School of Law and an Assistant Professor of Law. She was born in Jasper County, South Carolina. Professor Gibson received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from North Carolina State University and her Juris Doctor cum laude from NCCU School of Law.
Professor Gibson was previously employed as a Staff Attorney with the North Carolina Court of Appeals, Office of Staff Counsel. Prior to being a Staff Attorney, she was law clerk to Judge Clifton E. Johnson (retired) and Judge (now Justice) Patricia Timmons-Goodson at the Court of Appeals. Professor Gibson’s professional memberships include the N.C. State Bar, N.C. Bar Association, Tenth Judicial District Bar Association, Legal Writing Institute, and Plagiarism Committee.
Professor Gibson is a member of the Bar Enhancement and Retention Committee, Admissions Committee, Curriculum Committee, and Ad Hoc Faculty Services Committee. She has also conducted training sessions for the Law School’s journals and Moot Court Board.
Professor Gibson is a voracious reader and enjoys writing. She has been a contributing author to the NCCU School of Law’s Of Counsel alumni magazine since 1998. Her hobbies include reading and mentoring community youth.
Professor Gibson is married to Adolph Simmons, Jr., and they have two sons. The family resides in Raleigh, North Carolina.
