Biography

Laura Shepherd Brooks was born in Anniston, Alabama, but was raised in New York City. She graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School and then attended Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York, where she majored in Psychology.   She then attended Syracuse University College of Law and received her J.D. in 1993. During law school, Dean Brooks also served as a pre-law advisor for the undergraduate school.

After graduation, Dean Brooks joined the office of the District Attorney of New York County as an Assistant District Attorney where she had a particular interest in domestic violence cases. In 1998, Dean Brooks became a Director of Academic Affairs at New York Law School in New York City.

In 2002, Dean Brooks assumed the position of Assistant Secretary to the New Jersey Board of Bar Examiners. Dean Brooks managed all aspects of the attorney admissions process in the state of New Jersey, including administration of the bar examination, character and fitness and in-house counsel limited licenses. During her tenure at the New Jersey Board of Bar Examiners, she also served as the Executive Secretary of the Council of Bar Admission Administrators.

In 2011, Dean Brooks was the Director of Administration and Membership for the Kerr Family YMCA/YMCA at the Factory in Raleigh.

Dean Brooks’ interests include running, reading and playing with her two sons.
