Alicia Dawn Williams, Esq. (Law ‘11) is currently the Patent Fellow with NCCU School of Law’s Intellectual Property Law Institute (IPLI). While a student at NCCU School of Law, Ms. Williams was a Senior Editor on the NCCU Law Review and the Vice President of the Moot Court Board. Ms. Williams obtained her LL.M. in Taxation from NYU School of Law and subsequently worked as an associate in the Mergers and Acquisitions group with KPMG, LLP. After successfully passing the patent bar examination, Ms. Williams performed discovery on patent infringement cases involving roofing technologies and medical devices. In addition to assisting clients in federal trademark registration, she has also represented a start-up company in a potential trademark opposition matter. Ms. Williams taught Torts and Civil Litigation at Berkeley College in New York, NY. Prior to joining the IPLI, Ms. Williams served as a Visiting Faculty member at Guizhou University of Finance and Economics’ Larry L. Luing School of Business in Guiyang, Guizhou Province, China. There, she taught Business Law as part of Berkeley College’s Global Alliance Program, a cooperative education initiative.


In her role as Patent Fellow with the IPLI, Ms. Williams will handle Inter Partes Review (IPR) cases before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)’s Patent and Trademark Appeal Board (PTAB). She will work with the Patent Counsel for SAS Institute. Ms. Williams will also partner with the 2 most active law firms in the PTAB, Jones Day and Fish Richardson, on all aspects of the IPR process including petition drafting, depositions of inventors and experts, oral arguments to the PTAB and subsequent appeals to the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. Additionally, Ms. Williams will provide support to the Intellectual Property Law Journal and serve as an in-house mentor to Intellectual Property students.


Given the scarcity of minority attorneys in the field of patent law, Ms. Williams is a trailblazer for those who will soon follow in her footsteps. Cognizant of her diverse background, Ms. Williams prides herself on being non-traditional. Her motto is: “What’s important is not how you arrive at your destination, but what you do when you get there.” Ms. Williams holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from UNC – Chapel Hill, a Juris Doctor from NCCU School of Law (magna cum laude), and an LL.M. in Taxation from NYU School of Law. Ms. Williams is currently a board member of the Jazz Collective, Inc., a non-profit corporation. She has also volunteered with NC LEAP. Ms. Williams is licensed in North Carolina, New York, New Jersey and is registered before the USPTO.
